The short version
New Canaan favors buyers who will trade commute speed for a complete village center, architecture, and more inland acreage. Darien favors a more direct main-line ride and coastal access.
Rail is the cleanest divider
Darien sits on the New Haven main line. New Canaan uses a branch, and service patterns may involve different frequency or transfers. Hybrid schedules make that tradeoff easier for some buyers.
The Saturday test
Walk both centers, then drive the residential roads that fit your budget. Each town’s promise is real, but neither can be reduced to its high-level statistics.
